Facial yoga: myth or magic?!

Skincare and yoga

Yoga has now become one of the hottest self-care tools in today's society and its both calming and strengthening effect on the body and mind is something that connects the entire world. But is yoga also beneficial for our skin? For some time now, a new beauty trend has been circulating the Internet, claiming that so-called facial yoga can rejuvenate us, make our skin more radiant, and naturally combat wrinkles and frown lines. What's the secret to the latest beauty trend and does it really work?

What is facial yoga?

To be clear from the start: you don't need a yoga mat or be flexible for face yoga. Face yoga happens…well, on the face. The “yoga” part of the name just makes exercises specifically for the facial area a little more “sexy.” In short, face yoga is like going to the gym, but instead of working your abs, you work your facial muscles.

The method includes a variety of massage techniques and exercises that train the face, neck and shoulder area. The different exercises relax the tensions often unconsciously held in the face. This softens facial features and reduces wrinkles . At the same time, face yoga also strengthens the facial muscles, which in turn improves the structure of loose and sagging skin areas, lifting them and making the face look younger and firmer.

The advantage of facial yoga: you can create a tailor-made routine based on exercises that suit you and your skin problems. Whether it's worry lines, sagging skin or crow's feet, facial yoga offers a suitable solution for every skincare goal. Thanks to the variety of online tutorials and programs (sometimes free), the exercises can be learned quickly and easily. It sounds great, but is face yoga effective?

How effective is facial yoga?

Face yoga is said to have many benefits. So-called facial yogis report healthier, glowing skin, strengthened facial muscles that reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and generally a younger-looking face thanks to areas of tightened and redefined skin. Additionally, massage techniques are said to promote blood circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, and help relieve tension and stress. What makes it even better: exercises not only benefit your skin, but also your general well-being, because they facilitate relaxation and therefore have a positive effect on stress reduction.

Besides the many enthusiastic voices, there are already a small number of studies examining the effectiveness of this new beauty trend. Here are some ideas.

A 2018 study examined the effectiveness of 32 facial exercises on the appearance of signs of aging in middle-aged women. Over a five-month period, participants performed a sequence of specific facial exercises during a 30-minute session. During the first two months, the exercises were performed every day, and for the next three months, every other day. Most women were very satisfied with the results at the end of the study period. They reported improved facial fullness and significant improvements in 18 of 20 facial features tested.

Another Survey However, from 2014, which included a total of 9 studies on the effectiveness of face yoga as well as its effects on facial rejuvenation, it was concluded that further research was needed to achieve a result truly meaningful. The results of the studies were considered inconclusive and too subjective because the studies were very small and their success depended heavily on the opinions of the authors and study participants themselves.

Generally speaking, it should be noted that the possible results of facial yoga also strongly depend on other individual factors, such as the texture of the skin (which, however, cannot be changed by facial exercises) as well as the level personal stress, diet, sleep and genes.

The price: time, consistency and effort.

The great thing about facial yoga: It's all-natural, safe, and free, making it a great addition to your skincare routine. What makes it so unique is that it not only helps us age gracefully, but also our overall health at the same time. Improved well-being. Despite all this, it all comes at a price: time, consistency, and continued effort.

To achieve truly significant results, the exercises should be performed consistently over a period of approximately 30 minutes per day for months. Considering that time is such a scarce resource these days, this is where opinions divide at the latest.

However, yoga and skincare are essential to our daily well-being. And it's amazing how the two can even complement each other perfectly in one way or another.
